Cleaners clean a surface, sanitizers reduce the number of germs on a surface, and disinfectants kill & inactivate pathogens.
If we designed a new multi-purpose disinfectant from scratch, what would we want it to do?
At the top of the list is efficacy: how well it kills microorganisms, especially highly-resistant spores and viruses, which are used as the gold standard for microbial effectiveness.
Then there’s the speed of kill: it must kill germs quickly, without having to leave the surface wet for 2 to 3, or 5 to 10 minutes to be effective (contact, dwell or kill time). Many chemicals can harm expensive surfaces over time, and the longer they stay wet the worse it is.
Next is the regrowth rate, or the ability of our new solution to keep killing germs once the surface dries (residual kill time). These requirements, the speed of kill, efficacy and regrowth allow us to assess the kill kinetics of a disinfectant.
It should be easy and quick to use, ideally without leaving a sticky chemical residue or smear, with no need to wipe or rinse surfaces
It should be able replace other chemicals such as glass, bathroom and floor cleaners, making it cost effective and reducing training time.
Health & Safety must be high on the list, so there is no harm or unhealthy side effects to: the people doing the cleaning, employees, students, guests, customers, the public, etc., from inhalation, skin or eye contact, accidental ingestion, and without the need for much, if any PPE.
It must be Non-Toxic to People and Good for the Planet, by being chemical-free, biodegradable and reducing the huge number of single use plastic bottles, which end up in landfills or worse.
It should maintain its potency and have a good shelf life of 12 months or longer and of course it would have to pass the relevant disinfecting certifications.
It should be reasonably priced, but the truth is, the more toxic a disinfectant is, the cheaper it is.
For the health and wellness of every person, purchasing a safe and effective disinfectant is not the place to look for bargain prices.
Now we know what our solution should do… but is there already a product available that meets all of the requirements above?
There is, and guess what… you don’t have to buy expensive equipment to make it yourself, or enter into a long term contract to get the best price!
